The Merchant: Ballymena’s Chippy Goes Big

You don’t need a map to find some of the UK’s best fish and chips — just head down Linenhall Street. The Merchant in Ballymena has officially been named one of the top 40 chip shops in the UK, and it’s the only one from Northern Ireland to make the list. Not bad for a local spot that’s been quietly serving up crispy cod and golden chips for years.
This isn’t their first win either — The Merchant’s already scooped top honours in NI a few years ago. What makes them stand out? It’s simple: fresh fish, proper chips, friendly service, and a team that cares. Locals know it, visitors find out fast, and now the rest of the UK’s catching on.
The nomination comes from the National Fish & Chip Awards — basically the Champions League of chippies — and The Merchant’s in the running for Takeaway of the Year 2026. From product quality to sustainability and good old-fashioned hospitality, they tick all the boxes.
No gimmicks. No fuss. Just great food, made right.
If you haven’t been in a while (or ever), consider this your nudge. Grab a supper, taste what all the talk’s about, and support a Ballymena business doing us proud.
